

Constrained by the engineering marvel of the Hoover Dam, this lake ranks as the largest man made lake in the entire United States. To give you a good picture of its volume, if you have ever seen the Colorado River flow in the Grand Canyon, this lake is said to hold the equivilent of the river's flow for 2 years.
Boater's have plenty of area on the lake's 110 mile length. With 1.5 million acres, it is twice the size of Rhode Island. Endless little beaches and coves provide visitors plenty of hideaways swim, camp and fish.
This seemingly barren area contains a surprising variety of plants and animals, some of which may be found nowhere else in the world. The Lake Mead National Recreation Area was established October 8, 1964. Largemouth Black Bass, striped bass, channel catfish, bluegill and crappie fill its waters.
Houseboating and day boating are extremely popular on Lake Mead. The size of the lake is ideal for water-skiing. Consistent desert breezes ensure that those seeking the thrill of sailboats and sailboards will not be disappointed. Of course, swimming is popular during summer months when lake temperatures reach the 80-degree range.
See the Alan Bible Visitor Center for the lake's fishing, boating, watersports, wildlife and desert travel. The Rangers have free literature and can advise you on the lake's backcountry trails roads and camping. As weather can always approach un-suspectingly, its a good idea to talk to these experts before venturing out.
Tours of the lake are available on the The Desert Princess, a 250 passenger paddle-wheeler located at Lake Mead Marina.
